Understand the fundamentals of Design Thinking


Developed by IDEO founder David Kelley, Design Thinking is defined as “a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.” The method focuses on three main elements of a product or solution: people, technology, and business. All of these aspects revolve around the customer.

WIRED is hosting a 2-day DESIGN THINKING Workshop for you to explore a human-centered mindset. You will get to know Design Thinking hands-on by exploring various methods & tools and applying them to a concrete challenge.

The course will provide you with short inputs, methods and tools for creative problem solving. We will cover all phases of the innovation process - from user reasearch to a final prototype.

What is Design Thinking?


Design Thinking is a process that provides methods, tools and a language for multidisciplinary collaboration.

At its core Design Thinking is about understanding people´s needs and creatively discovering the best solutions to meet those needs. Creating with a human-centered mindset means not to merely focus on technical feasibility and business viability, but also to understand the context, culture, behaviours, attitudes and needs of the stakeholders involved.

Design Thinking is using real user research through direct observation and in-depth interviews to create qualitative data and user stories that a multidisciplinary Design Thinking team can empathize with.

After the research the Design Thinking team is able to define what the actual problem is. After the problem is defined in synthesis the Design Thinking team will brainstorm to create new ideas for possible solutions. Because Design Thinking is about learning by doing, these ideas are transformed into rapid prototypes to learn about the quality of the ideas by testing them in the real world with real users. Based on the feedback of the users, these prototypes will be iterated and tested again until the Design Thinking team is confident that they developed a solution (that could be a product, service or concept) that is meaningful for the user.

The Agenda of the Workshop


Part 1: User Research & Inspiration

- Get into the mind of your potential user -

We’ll start the workshop by exploring our challenge through the eyes of our potential users. This phase is not about finding a solution just yet. It is about deeply understanding the (actual) problem by gaining empathy, seeing into potential users needs, and making sense of our collected insights.


Part 2: Ideation

- Explore and develop possible solutions -

This part is all about creativity, imagination and openness to wild concepts! We will focus on the solution space - generating lots of ideas by applying different creativity techniques.


Part 3: Prototyping & Testing

- Get your hands dirty -

In the final part, we transfer our ideas and concepts into tangible prototypes! By observing how potential users interact with them we can test critical functions and hypotheses. Our users feedback and new ideas will help us to

The facilitators of the Design Thinking workshop


Claudia Brückner

Claudia Brückner is an Event Experience Designer and Innovation Facilitator. She helps to create meaningful event experiences for companies such as BASF, Factory Berlin and Fraunhofer Netzwerk Marketing. Claudia develops concepts for participatory conference formats and teaches Design Thinking at the HPI Academy & School of Design Thinking Clients of all industries (insurance, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals etc.).

Franziska Krüger

Franziska Krüger is a creative strategist with a bias for action. Working at the intersections of human-centered innovation and digital transformation, she has a deep passion for creating environments that challenge individuals and organizations to grow, explore change and prototype desirable futures. Franziska heads up a design & innovation unit at AutoVision (A Volkswagen Group Company).
